{"id":2602,"date":"2019-05-21T09:07:02","date_gmt":"2019-05-21T14:07:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.durhamfriendsmeeting.org\/?p=2602"},"modified":"2019-05-21T09:07:08","modified_gmt":"2019-05-21T14:07:08","slug":"durham-monthly-meeting-minutes-april-21-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.durhamfriendsmeeting.org\/?p=2602","title":{"rendered":"Durham Monthly Meeting Minutes, April 21, 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Durham\nMonthly Meeting of Friends convened in worship for the conduct of business on\nSunday, April 21, 2019 with 14 people present.&nbsp;\nClerk Susan Rice opened the meeting by reading a verse from a hymn,\n\u201cChrist Be Our Light.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1.&nbsp; The March 17, 2019 minutes were approved. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2.\nMinistry and Counsel:&nbsp; Martha\nHinshaw Sheldon reported for the committee. At their April meeting they\ndiscussed a proposal for a change in the order of worship: Hymns &#8211; Call to\nworship &#8211; Children&#8217;s message (1st and 3rd Sunday) &#8211; The message &#8211; Open worship\n&#8211; Joys and Concerns &#8211; Offering &#8211; Final Hymn &#8211; Handshake &#8211; Announcements.&nbsp;\nThey also discussed a concern shared from New England Yearly Meeting\n(NEYM).&nbsp; More information will be posted in the Newsletter with further\ndiscussion planned in following weeks.&nbsp; Pastoral care concerns were\nshared.&nbsp; One was a report on the housing upgrades for Ralph and Twila\nGreene.&nbsp; Nat Shed sent a second request to Obadiah Brown Fund for funds\nfor renovations on the house the Greens moved to recently.&nbsp; While it is\nbetter than the previous house it still needs a few repairs to make it more\ncomfortable.&nbsp; If you are led to help financially with this project or want\nto help with the renovation work, contact the team who have been working on\nthis concern &#8211; Nat Shed, Edwin Hinshaw, Dorothy Hinshaw, and Nancy\nMarstaller.&nbsp; There are other such pastoral care teams throughout Durham\nFriends Meeting who have been laboring tirelessly to share ministry and support\nfor many who have been in need in the past few months.&nbsp; \u201cAs clerk I am\nvery appreciative of these individuals and groups as they shine the light and\nlove of God to many in our meeting,\u201d Martha added. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The meeting thanked Ministry and Counsel\n(M&amp;C) for their careful consideration of our worship hour and suggested\nthat we try their changed format during the months of May and the first two\nweeks of June, with further discussion on this new plan at the June Monthly\nMeeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3.&nbsp; Christian Education: Wendy\nSchlotterbeck reported that an egg hunt was held this morning for Easter Day,\nand we enjoyed a delicious breakfast prepared by Katherine Langelier, Dorothy\nCurtis, and Kim Bolshaw, with other tasty donations by attenders.&nbsp; They announced that the annual yard sale will\nbe June 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4.&nbsp; Peace and Social Concerns:&nbsp; Four members of the committee met on April 9\nat Brown Letham\u2019s apartment: Linda Muller, Cush Anthony, Brown Letham and\nIngrid Chalufour.&nbsp; They discussed\nupcoming events.&nbsp; Linda and Ingrid\nreported that the group planning the climate panel had their third meeting at\nthe UU church, and Ron Turcotte, the moderator of the panel, attended.&nbsp; The group outlined an agenda and talked\nthrough all the details of the evening.&nbsp;\nBrown volunteered to get a climate change banner and to be on the\nclean-up crew. All will distribute posters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp; Ingrid reported on her first Brunswick Area\nInterfaith Council meeting, where she passed out a preliminary flier about the\nclimate panel.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; They discussed the April 27 Bath Iron Works\nvigil. They will car pool from Brunswick and hope others will join them.&nbsp; Brown has printed a handout showing research\non the costs of war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; Plans were made concerning the message and\npotluck discussion on April 28.&nbsp; Linda\nwill deliver the message planned by the group and Ingrid will organize small\nand large group discussions.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5.&nbsp; Trustees: Kitsie Hildebrandt reported\nfor the Trustees. Katherine Langelier has asked that parents of home school\nchildren schedule the meetinghouse and grounds for a regular Gentle Parenting\nMeeting.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Trustees have asked Rick\u2019s Pump Service to\nmake recommendations to update our water system; Dan Henton will carry out a\n\u201cdump run\u201d with trash from the horse shed; and they will begin having a trash\npick-up at the meetinghouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>6.&nbsp; We approved the scheduling of the Gentle\nParenting Meeting group using the meeting house social room area partitioned\noff from the library. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>7.&nbsp; Finance Committee:&nbsp; Kitsie Hildebrandt handed out the first\nquarter financial report (attached) which we accepted with gratitude.&nbsp; The parsonage pellet boiler damage was\nrepaired, and the insurance payment received.&nbsp;\nWe were reminded that the Ralph and Twila Greene fund is a project of\nthe NEYM, but that Durham Friends Meeting is a conduit of financial\ncontributions received for their house repair.&nbsp;\nMore information may be gained from the ad hoc \u201cGreene Care Team\u201d\nmentioned above in the M&amp;C report. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; We are very thankful for a generous donation\nfrom Janet Douglas\u2019 gifts and memorials.
