In early August, with the many recent asylum seekers staying at\nthe Portland Expo needing homes, a call went out for people to host families in\ntheir homes. Wendy Schlotterbeck,\nDurham\u2019s Youth Minister who has devoted a great deal of time working with the\nasylum seekers, offered to take a family of eight from East Africa into her\nhome in Auburn. Wendy says the family is\nsettling in well and seems happy to be here. \nThe children are learning English and are excited that school will soon\nbe starting. Wendy brought the mother to\na prenatal check-up where they discovered she will be having twins in November,\nso soon there will be ten!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Cash or gift cards for household\nand personal needs<\/p>\n\n\n\n
2. Soccer shin guards and mouth\nguards for the 13-year-old and the 14-year-old<\/p>\n\n\n\n
3. Laptop insurance fees for two\nmiddle school students ($50 each) so they can bring their laptops home<\/p>\n\n\n\n
4. Ear buds or earphones for\ncomputers (four sets)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
5. Extra-large soup pot with\nlid \u2014 extremely needed!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
6. HELP assembling a play structure\nwith slide (needs some sanding and painting)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
7. HELP sorting and transporting\ndonations<\/p>\n\n\n\n
8. A towel rack (nine people and one\nbathroom make for a lot of wet towels!). \nThere is a great ladder towel rack at Bed, Bath and Beyond for $69.99. Here is the site:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
