{"id":2712,"date":"2019-09-02T11:08:16","date_gmt":"2019-09-02T16:08:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.durhamfriendsmeeting.org\/?p=2712"},"modified":"2019-09-02T11:08:22","modified_gmt":"2019-09-02T16:08:22","slug":"durham-monthly-meeting-minutes-july-21-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.durhamfriendsmeeting.org\/?p=2712","title":{"rendered":"Durham Monthly Meeting Minutes, July 21, 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Durham\nMonthly Meeting of Friends convened for the conduct of business on Sunday, July\n21, 2019 with 10 people present.&nbsp; Clerk\nSusan Rice read a quote by Parker Palmer from the New England Yearly Meeting\nFaith and Practice pp. 123-124.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1.\nThe June minutes were approved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2.\nChristian Education Committee: &nbsp;Katherine (Qat) Langelier brought the\nfollowing report submitted by Wendy Schlotterbeck: The committee met on July\n7.&nbsp; They reminded us that personal\nhygiene stations are now available in each of the adult bathrooms for anyone\nneeding them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;They\ndiscussed more ways to make our meetinghouse and grounds a welcoming place for\nnewcomers, especially families with young children. They plan to contact\nTrustees about putting up fencing that has been donated to keep the play area\nsafe for active children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;The plant\nand yard sale netted $549.11. Special thanks to everyone who donated plants,\nclothes, and items, and a big shout-out to those who helped take all the extras\naway!! The youth will use $500 to support Cornelius, our Kakamega sponsee. The\nDurham Young Friends Account at Central Maine Credit Union has a balance of $1,000.31.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;The\ncommittee is planning Sunday School for the next school year, and is reaching\nout to invite more Durham Friends to become trained in Godly Play. They ask,\n\u201cAre you being led to participate in the lives of our children in this way,\noccasionally if not regularly?\u201d&nbsp; If there\nis enough interest, the committee hopes to host a training workshop.&nbsp; They are also looking for more Doorkeepers, a\nspecial role that involves meeting each child before they enter the Godly Play\nspace and helping them to be ready for the story. The Doorkeeper also \u201cholds\u201d\nthe children and story time in a similar way to those who have Care of Meeting\nfor Worship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;With\nthe change in the flow of Meeting for Worship, they discussed moving the start\nof Sunday School to 10:30 and having the children rejoin Meeting for Worship\njust before Joys and Concerns around 11:20. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;The\ncommittee discussed the value of gardening for children, and the ways they\nmight include this activity in our Sunday School\/youth programming.&nbsp; Qat Langelier is planning to attend the\nPermaculture Design Certification Course at the Pendle Hill retreat and\nconference center in Wallingford, PA, Sept. 15-27, 2019. This course will\nenable Qat to learn valuable gardening skills and be certified to teach and\nshare those skills with Durham Friends of all ages. She has been given a scholarship\nof $700 from Pendle Hill, which reduces her cost to $1,450.&nbsp; The Christian Education Committee is\nrequesting that an amount of $500 be given to her from Durham Meeting to help\nwith the cost.&nbsp; Qat will also need help\nwith childcare for some of the days while she is away. Please contact Wendy\nSchlotterbeck if you are willing to help with childcare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;Wendy\nwill be a Resource Person for the Young Friends program at NEYM Sessions August\n2-8 in Castleton, Vermont.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;Sunday\nSchool for children and youth will resume on Sunday, September 15. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;World\nQuaker Day will be celebrated on Sunday, October 6 as Homecoming for former and\ncurrent Durham Friends; it will be the official opening of Sunday School and\nyouth programming for the 2019-2020 school year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;Qat\nLangelier reported that 15 people attended the weekend on the beach at the\nGeorgetown home of Betsy Muench.&nbsp; Much\nappreciation was expressed for Betsy\u2019s hospitality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3.\nWe approved the donation of $500 from the Charity Account as requested by the Christian\nEducation Committee to help support Qat Langelier\u2019s attendance at the Pendle\nHill Permaculture Design Certification Course. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4.\nFinance Committee: Sarah Sprogell gave the six-month financial statement\n(attached) and reported that we are on target for income and expenses to date.\nWe thanked Katharine Hildebrandt and Donna Hutchins for securing insurance\ncoverage for parsonage damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5.&nbsp; Margaret Wentworth reported that the Nominating\nCommittee recommends that Katharine Hildebrandt become a Trustee, and the\nmeeting heartily approved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>6.\nPeace and Social Concerns Committee: Brown Lethem reported for the\ncommittee. They have three young women who will participate in the conversation\nabout the climate crisis on September 29 at 12:30 at the meetinghouse. They\nhope everyone can come. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;The\ndocumentary film <em>Paris to Pittsburgh<\/em>,\nmentioned in last month\u2019s minutes, was donated to the committee by Interfaith\nPower and Light. The film is about the climate crisis and what some local\nactivists are doing. They will show this film in house parties during October\nand November. Let Ingrid Chalufour know if you would like to host a party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;The\ncommittee requests that Durham Meeting be a sponsor of the annual Peace Fair on\nthe Brunswick Mall on August 3.&nbsp; Our\nmeeting name would be on the Peace Fair materials, and they plan to have a\nhandout on the fair table from 10:00 to 2:30. A thank-you letter was received\nfor our participation in last year\u2019s fair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>7.\nWe approved the suggestion that we be a sponsor of the Peace Fair and that our\nmeeting name be on the Peace Fair materials, as well as providing handouts\nregarding Durham Friends Meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>8.\nCraig Freshley sent a thank-you letter for our contribution and support of the\nMake Shift Coffee House program.&nbsp; The\nspiritual oversight committee for Craig\u2019s ministry includes Katharine\nHildebrandt, Tess Hartford, Kristna Evans, and Wendy Schlotterbeck.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>9.\nTrustees: Donna Hutchins sent the report.&nbsp; Trustees met on July 7. They report that the\nmeetinghouse heat pump is not working, and Kim Bolshaw met with the installer\nto resolve the problem.&nbsp; Daniel Henton\nhas replaced the children\u2019s toilet that was malfunctioning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>10.&nbsp; We decided that we will not hold a monthly\nmeeting in August and there will not be an August newsletter.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>11.&nbsp; A discussion ensued regarding contributions\nto Quaker organizations and we were reminded that we are meeting on October 27\nto discuss priorities and the use of our funds.&nbsp;\nA follow-up discussion is suggested for the fourth Sunday in November to\ncontinue our consideration of how we use our assets to contribute and support\nvarious Quaker organizations.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>12.&nbsp; Sarah Sprogell, Auditor, reported that\nshe has completed the audit for 2013, which was a very challenging year\nfinancially.&nbsp; Steps were taken to remedy\nthe situation and a successful campaign at the end of the year helped us break\neven.
