Alice, by Kitsie Hildebrandt<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alice started joining our worship as an old lady.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was a neighbor of Muriel Marston<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that was more that good enough for me, for us at Durham Meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She always wore a well-worn acrylic cardigan, and was lovely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She became a regular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One Sunday she stood, and started to speak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(She had not spoken out of the silent worship before.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I didn\u2019t know she could speak another language, when<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suddenly it struck me that she was speaking in tongues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At a Quaker Meeting, imagine that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it was beautiful,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heartfelt, sincere, fervent, pleading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As she spoke<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I felt my judgment fade away; I was able to give over<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And my heart grew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I experienced God speaking<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To me, to everyone there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I longed to hear her again, and I did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have shared this experience with others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They usually frown, blink, and do that thing with their head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As if to say, \u201cHow can that be, in a Quaker Meeting?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
